Over 30,000 products from hemp. It's eco friendly, paper can be produced in 110 days not 40 years, and has holistic healing benefits. There are also legal issues. Hemp is classified as an illicit drug with the DEA. Our legislatures won't declassify hemp, it is not a drug it has been used over 10,000 years and historic farmers included George Washington. A Letter From Our Friends At VoteHemp.com
Here are some highlights from 2011:
Vote Hemp is a national, single-issue, nonprofit organization dedicated to the acceptance of and free market for industrial hemp, low-THC oilseed and fiber varieties of Cannabis, and to changes in current law to allow U.S. farmers to grow the crop.
Vote Hemp, Inc.
- H.R. 1831, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2011, was introduced by Rep. Ron Paul and now has the most co-sponsors since the bill was first introduced in 2005, a total of 31. The bill has broad bipartisan support including 7 Republicans and 25 Democrats. We gained the support of the ranking Democrat on the Agriculture committee, Rep. Collin Peterson, as well as the Republican chair of the Agriculture subcommittee on Rural Development, Research, Biotechnology, and Foreign Agriculture.
- We posted a petition "Allow Industrial Hemp to be Grown in the U.S. Once Again" on the new We the People site started by The White House. Our petition was signed by over 25,000 supporters and was one of the top 5 most supported issues. It has not received an official response from the Obama Administration yet. If you have not already signed and shared yet, please do so now at: http://wh.gov/gKH.
- We are still in discussions with officials at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and have briefed senior officials on the latest in the hemp industry. ONDCP staff has removed all references to hemp from its anti-drug web sites as a result of our request. They have requested information from us to assist in their review of the We the People petition we filed. They have taken their time reviewing the petition, unlike several others.
- California's hemp farming bill, SB 676, was passed by the Legislature, only to be vetoed by Governor Brown. On a positive note, Governor Brown noted his support for a change in federal law and commented on the absurdity of the federal ban on hemp farming in his veto message.
- Five states introduced hemp farming legislation. None of the bills became law this year, but we are hopeful that we can get help legislation passed in the next session.

In cooperation with the Hemp Industries Association (HIA), we held the second annual Hemp History Week in May 2011 and it was very successful with over 500 events in all 50 states. Plans are already underway for a much larger Hemp History Week celebration in 2012 with a goal of 1,000 events. If you would like to get involved, please visit: HempHistoryWeek.com/getinvolved.
We are currently working hard on securing a co-sponsor for hemp legislation in the U.S. Senate. Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon has agreed to introduce companion legislation to H.R. 1831 once we locate a Republican cosponsor. We are working hard to find that cosponsor and hope to have a Senate hemp bill introduced before Hemp History Week in June 2012.
Vote Hemp is only able to continue this work with the support from people like you.
Vote Hemp needs your donation to enable us to continue our work in the coming year. This year is our eleventh anniversary, and YOU have been a crucial part of our progress over those eleven years. With your continued support, we can keep hemp farming in the forefront at the state and federal level. Once again this year, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps has generously agreed to match every dollar you donate, doubling the impact of your contribution!
We also want to let you know about a special eBay auction of an original copy of The Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2011 printed on hemp paper and signed by Ron Paul. This is one of only 3 copies (two were complete sets with pens and photographs) and will be an amazing collectors item. Grab a piece of history and support Vote Hemp. All proceeds go to benefit Vote Hemp.
Please make a contribution to Vote Hemp today to help us continue working towards a renewal of hemp farming in the U.S. We need and truly appreciate your support!
Thank you in advance,
Eric Steenstra
President
